Contracts: Bayelsa communities lament

NO fewer than 12 oil-producing communities in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have called on Shell Petroleum Development Company to use local contractors in the execution of projects in their communities.

The communities expressed their grouse in a statement on Sunday signed by the Chairmen of Iduwini, Mein, Kou and Bassan West Cluster Boards, Tiko Tiko, Ati Robert, Bralade Ebabogha and Chief Timi Seimiebe, respectively.

It reads, “At a workshop held between the company and communities’ vendors in 2013, both parties resolved that when all the ongoing contracts such as catering, sand supply, supply of platform support vessels, anchor handling vessels expired, they would strictly be handled by communities’ vendors.

“However, the reverse has become the case such as the Pull Back Tug Boat Supply contract awarded C& I Leasing Company and supply of the security vessels are among those which should be immediately revoked and re-awarded to the 12 communities vendors.

“We therefore call on SPDC not to take the peaceful disposition of Ekeremor communities for granted by ensuring that they abide by all the agreement reached between both parties in September 2013.”
