Athletes seeking for a slice of the 2016 Olympics action will compete to be included in the list of Nigerian party to the Games billed for Rio, Brazil in August. Though there is no confirmation that Nigeria will attend the Olympics due to financial constraints, top Nigerian athletes from home and abroad are warming for the trials to be conducted at the Blessing Okagbare Stadium in Sapele starting from today.
“Sapele is brim-full of Olympic hopefuls even as there is no guarantee we will be at the Olympics. “We have quit a number of athletes from the abroad, some who are coming for the first and wishing to be part of Nigeria’s team to the Olympics,” said coach Seigha Porbeni.
He added athletics officials are expecting a tough competition based on the number of turn out for the trials, which will be followed by the CAA Grand prix and Relay meet where Nigerian relay teams… the men 4×100, men and women 4x400m will vie to better their times and be in the world best 16, that earns automatic qualification to compete at the Olympic Games. It is only the women 4x100m quartet that is assured of a place so far, they could even be pushed out by other qualification seeking teams with better times, if the don’t improve in Sapele. “It is going to very interesting, we wait to see how things will shape up.
We have Nigerian athletes from all countries you can think of who are here to competition. The decision by the AFN to run the trial despite the financial challenges is good decision after all,” said coach Daniel Estebiminor.
The 100m event will be decided this evening with home girl Blessing Okagbare willing to thrill her folks. In the men Seye Ogunlewe will face tough test from in form Divine Oduduru, Ogho-Oghene Egwero and others.
