Two children die as car crashes into loch near Oban

    Two children aged two and three died after the car they were in crashed into a loch, Police Scotland has said.

    The bodies of the children were recovered from Loch nan Druimnean, north of the village of Kilmelford in Argyll, after the crash on Wednesday.

    A coastguard helicopter and police dive teams had scoured the loch after the alarm was raised at about 16:00.

    A 36-year-old woman was taken to hospital in Oban as a precaution and released after treatment.

    The crash happened on the A816 Oban to Lochgilphead road, about 17 miles from Oban.

    Conditions were said to have been very wet at the time, with surface water in many places on the road.

    Relatives of the two children have been made aware of the crash, police said. Work to recover the vehicle from the water continued late into the night.

    Insp Darren Faulds of Police Scotland said: “Two young children have lost their lives and our thoughts and condolences go out to the family of those involved in this tragic incident.”

    He said inquiries were continuing to establish the circumstances of the crash, and any witnesses to the crash have been urged to contact the police.
